Family Support Specialist – Missoula
Since: 2005
Laura was working as a paraeducator and wanted to find a year-round job. She was hired as a Direct Support Professional and shortly after moved into an FSS role. She works mostly with kids aged 0-36 months, but has clients all the way up to 14 years old.
Standout moment: Going to adoption of one of my kids. He was around three years old, and we went to the courthouse with all kinds of family and friends present. His older siblings had already been adopted by the same couple, and everyone was over the moon! I was so honored to be invited to that milestone.
What I’ve Learned: Kids are unique. Each one requires something different. You can’t assume something will work with one kid just because it worked with another. The challenge of finding out what works for a client and their family is a great part of the job. It keeps me on my toes.
Pet Tales: I have three dogs and five cats. Two of the cats are 15-year-old twins. They can suck the life out of you if you’re not careful. But I’m never lonely. There’s always somebody who wants to be in your lap, be fed, or just look at you like they want something. And this is after I got rid of my horses and goats! If I wasn’t working with kids, I’d be working with animals.
